$2.50 Liberty

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1330
1840-O. ICG graded AU-55. Plenty of luster remains, untoned. Usual slight weakness on the high points of Liberty and eagle. New Orleans Mint, like its sister mints at Charlotte and Dahlonega, opened for business in 1838. By 1840, having had the latest equipment installed, it was striking silver and gold coins in abundance. Peak production, however, wouldn't be reached until the late 1840s into the early 1850s. Only 33,580 minted.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,400.

Lot 1331
1844-D. NGC graded AU-58. Boldly struck with light golden toning and traces of flashy semi reflective surfaces peeking through; some faint hairlines. Well struck on the hair waves and lovelock curl. For its part, the eagle is possessed of full neck and wing feathers, complete plumage on the legs, and full talons -- a bonus for collectors who prefer the rarer D (and C) mint dates. These rarely show such forthright detail. Only 17, 332 struck. Pop 40; 20 finer (PCGS # 7736) .
Estimated Value $4,200 - 4,500.

Lot 1332
1846-D. NGC graded MS-61. A nice bold strike with plenty of mint luster still evident. With a mintage of nearly 20,000, the 1846-D is one of the more affordable Dahlonega quarter eagles in the series. Mint States are elusive. Perhaps three-quarters of the survivors are in the Very Fine to Extremely Fine grade range. About a dozen to two dozen Mint States may be all that exist (see below).

The obverse is particularly well struck with no flattening on the hair, stars or the denticles. On the reverse, the same holds true except that some of the lower denticles are fused together. The central reverse including the shield is bold and there is full sharpness on the eagle's left (facing) leg.

Turning next to the luster, we find a few very fine hairlines (not from cleaning), though all in all the fields are exceptionally lustrous for an issue that is almost always seen with severe marks and or cleaning. The surfaces are defect-free. In brief, this is a lovely coin for the date and grade, and is certainly among the most appealing 1846-D quarter eagles from an aesthetic standpoint. Pop 4; 7 finer (PCGS # 7742) .
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.

1848-C. NGC graded AU-55. Light honey color toning. Some residual luster graces the lightly worn matte-like surfaces of this attractively mainly untoned specimen. The strike is somewhat typical with strength on the reverse, minor weakness on the obverse through the hair curls, the stars, and on LIBERTY in the headband, though the design elements are free from heavy handling marks, which is always beneficial. Scarce.Only 16,788 minted. Pop 22; 48 finer (PCGS # 7750) .

Lot 1336
1858-C. NGC graded MS-63. Well struck for this issue and full of satiny mint luster. Only 9,056 struck. A satiny matte-like specimen with resilient underlying luster and lovely toning highlights. From center to periphery, the coin is generally well struck with just a hint of soft design in the area around the shield. Sometimes collectors expect an early branch mint coin of the 1850s to be like clay in the palms of the press operators who manufacture such coins, turning out one perfect specimen after the next. But it was a difficult task to generate consistent quality in the atmosphere of a hardworking mint establishment. The main problem facing Charlotte (and also Dahlonega) was a shortage of experienced staff who had to be drawn from the rural surroundings in which these mints were built. The mint's equipment was up to the task, don't think it wasn't. When these two branches were erected in 1835-38, they were equipped with all the latest equipment. But it takes more than machinery to tweak and fine tune a minting press. We should be thankful that a few really choice, frosty pieces like this 1858-C quarter eagle exist and can be acquired today. Pop 4; none finer (PCGS # 7787) .
Estimated Value $13,000 - 14,000.

1906. NGC graded Proof 67* Cameo. An exquisite superb Gem Cameo Proof. Only 160 Proofs struck and this certainly ranks among the finest. Clever individuals might search long hours to unearth any problems with the absolutely gorgeous mint color and surfaces here. The search would turn up nothing but 100% positive results! Sleek bright gold mirror fields polished to perfection as the dies struck, and maintained with loving care ever since by generations of numismatists. The devices too, are well frosted by the dies, including the stars and date as well as the lettering, enough so to earn the coveted "cameo" designation from NGC along with a Star rating. Of course the strike is perfect -- how else could it be? -- with no weak areas whatsoever. Proof mintage for the year was typical for dates after 1900, not very many considering that a few have been spent or lost over the years, or otherwise misplaced, chipping away at available offerings for collectors. Here is a high end gem for the specialist. Pop 4; 3 finer in 68 (PCGS # 87932) .

1906. PCGS graded MS-67. Gorgeous sunset golden and olive toning with nearly flawless surfaces throughout. In an old PCGS green label holder. A remarkable coin that emits eye-catching gold and pink halo color, with no marks or problems for the skeptic to uncover. A dullish impression was never left by the recoil of the dies that struck most 1906 Liberty Quarter Eagles, all are sharp to razor-sharp; however, we're pleased to see and report that this is an even bolder looking confirmation of that rule with the devices further amplified by the gorgeous surface originality.
